Keep Motivated to Be Successful
Being on a weight loss program isn’t a walk in the park, and it will take all the self-discipline you can muster and then some. There will be times when your enthusiasm wanes and you feel discouraged. Many people simply lose interest and drop out of their weight loss program. It’s so easy to take the line of least resistance; that’s why it is essential that you find ways to maintain a high level of motivation in order to succeed. You may stumble at times and feel like giving up, but what matters is that you get up and keep going.
Keep A Food Journal
One way to keep yourself on track is by keeping a food journal. Write down everything you have eaten, how many calories, and what emotional state you were in when you were eating (were you angry, sad, or bored?). When you monitor your caloric intake this way, you tend to pay more attention to what you put inside your mouth. We usually underestimate the amount of calories we are consuming; seeing the figures in black and white should be an eye-opener. You will also discover poor eating habits that you need to get rid of, such as “mindless eating” or eating as an emotional response to boredom or anger, or when you’re not really hungry. At the same time, weigh yourself every week (preferably at the same time and same day of the week) and write it down. As the weeks and months go by, you will see proof of your progress and be inspired to stick to your weight loss program.
Support Groups Help You Keep the Weight Off
The importance of a support group cannot be discounted. Studies have found that people were more likely to lose weight and keep it off if they had a support group or took part in a weight-loss program as a group activity. You’re more likely to stick to your weight loss plan if you have friends or family giving you encouragement along the way. If they’re also trying to lose weight, you will enjoy your workouts more if you exercise with them.
Have Goals to Reach Your Milestone and Reward Yourself
Reward yourself every time you reach a milestone – say, after losing a certain number of pounds or inches within a certain period. It’s a great motivational tool; it will give you something to look forward to. If you promise yourself something that you really want – an expensive bottle of perfume or a designer bag, for instance – and focus on it as you sweat it out at the gym, you will certainly work harder to earn it.
